The respective influences of the sediment and of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) farming on the accumulation and the recycling of different forms of organic and inorganic nitrogen are described. Fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen were studied between the water column, the water overlying the sediment and the pore waters, while for particulate forms the fluxes were studied between suspended material, the "biodeposits" (faeces and pseudofaeces of Crassostrea) and the sediment. The flux of inorganic nitrogen amounts to 10.5 106 g.m(-2). Yr(-1), while that of organic nitrogen is half this figure. The particulate flux is 15.106 g.m(-2).yr(-1). On the other hand, the phytoplanktonic nitrogen accounts for only 6% of the total particulate... |

In the Atlantic French coast, significant mortalities were observed in oyster communities during gametogenesis. These deaths possibly result from the cumulative effects of various stressors such as seasonal temperature variations, pesticide application and the release of contaminants from the resuspension of sediments. A field survey, based on aquaculture conditions at 15 and 70 cm from the sediment bed with genetically-resistant (R) and -sensitive (S) lines, showed a stress condition. Significant weight loss was observed during May 14th through June 10th for both R and S lines. On one hand, the levels of the egg yolk vitellin in females were decreased at May 14th for both R and S lines. On the other hand, a significant increase in vitellin production was... |

The Aber Benoît, a small estuary on the North West coast of Brittany was polluted by oil from the Amoco Cadiz oil spill. Preliminary results from water and sediment samples taken in the estuary in May 1978, show that two months after the initial spill, high concentrations of hydrocarbures existed in the water and sediments of the estuary. The Aber Benoît shows a well developed salt wedge and upstream increasing suspended sediment concentrations. Oil was dispersed more or less evenly throughout the water column, in the entire length of the estuary. In the bottom sediments, oil had accumulated to depths of 30 cm. Sand bars appear to induce a trapping of oil in the estuary channel. |

Within the national molluscan monitoring network, a sedimentary study was carried out on five experimental sites located in southern Brittany (i.e., from Etel to Pen-Bé rivers). The study aimed to specify sediment integrating characteristics with regards to hydrobiological variables. Moreover, interactions between sediment and water column characteristics were specified. It appears that this approach is likely unappropriate to characterize interdical rearing area productivity. However, this approach can support the site evaluation on a long term basis to sustain shellfish culture management. This would require additional study to assess sediment reactivity to abnormal events like drastic salinity decrease. |

This study contributes to inventory programme on emerging pollutants in French waters and to the general reflection which will enable to update the list of relevant substnaces to be included in the new monitoring programmes to come. This work concerns the coastal part of the inventory programme on marine waters and sediments of France and five overseas french departments (OFD). In this goal, passive sampling techniques and direct extraction techniques have been tested through the implementation of in situ systems integrators POCIS (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler) and the extraction by SBSE bars (Stir bar sorptive extraction) directly in the waters sampled. Finally, analyzes of sediment completed the acquisition of data. Arount 40 stations were... |

Chemical and Biological evolution of sediments in closed circuit : I. Nitrogen and bacteria. A series of well controlled sea water closed circuit sand filters allowed the study of chemical and biological regulation processes in the sediment. Bacteria, Nitrogen chemistry and meiofauna were mainly investigated. The evolution of the different forms of nitrogen is rather similar, whatever the organic matter flow in the sediment. As long as the amount of organic input works as limiting factor, bacteria densities are proportional to its flow. No correlation was found between bacteria and chemical parameters in the sand or in the water. The temperature does not seem to play a determinant part neither in the evolution of bacteria nor in the mineralization of... |

The evolution of nitrogen content in experimental closed circuit ¿and filters was followed, each tank being fed with different quantities of soluble organic matter. According to the trophic conditions, two types of metabolism could be observed : - a loss of nitrogen (denitrification), reaching almost 90% of the nitrogen input in eutrophic conditions, and close to 35% in mesotrophic conditions. - a gain in nitrogen (fixation), a predominant metabolism in oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Nitrogen retention in the sediment increases slightly with the organic matter input, but no proportionality could be established. It seems that the sediment, by its bacterial metabolisms, regulates its own organic matter richness. |

The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin de Thau is reproduced with a two-dimensional numerical model of horizontal ciruclation using an Alternate Direction Implicit scheme. A stochastic analysis of frequencies on a yearly time scale of the velocity fields computed in the model and a spatial and stochastic treatment of the term (H2 y2), similar to an effective coefficient of horizontal dispersion by shear effect are presented. This approach will allow the delineation, in a stochastic manner, of the main structures of the circulation in the lagoon and the spatial heterogeneity of its ecohydrodynamic features. Two attempts of analogical research are presented, with sorne examples of the spatial structure in the phytoplankton biomass and the map of the... |

ABSTRACT Geochemical background establishment is indispensable to determine the actual state of contamination of soils and sediments. However, no scientific consensus exists regarding the methodology for determining these values. In this context, this study aimed to establish the geochemical background in an Oxisol (Rhodic Hapludox) by means of an integrated method that uses direct and indirect soil analyses to identify the most appropriate calculation methodology. Soil samples were collected in a permanent preservation area of the Cascavel River watershed, PR, Brazil. The elements Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn present in soil samples were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The use of a permanent preservation area is... |

Two ~1000 cm long sediment cores were recovered from the Sea of Marmara, one with the occurrence of gas hydrates in the Western High, and the other without hydrates in the Cinarcik Basin. Differences in mineralogical and chemical compositions have been identified between the two sediment cores. Based on the results of the mineralogical and geochemical analyses, the main sources of the sediments are quite similar for both investigated areas, but the authigenic components are different, particularly iron sulfides and carbonates. Authigenic Fe(II) carbonate are much higher in Core MRS-CS-05 in the Western High, while crystalline Fe(III) phases are more abundant in Core MRS-CS-16 in the Cinarcik Basin. Notably, the enrichments of greigite (Fe3S4), a metastable... |
